The universe undoubtedly functions according to laws, that is not what should be under scrutiny. Instead of everything being random, as Hume thinks, everything happens according to laws, as has been quite obviously demonstrated. Hume has just gotten caught up on that we don't know for sure, but that is a tangent point that speaks more to human understanding than actual reality and rationality (because the two do not always coincide). Instead what is random and not designed (though we can never be sure unless it is a conscious creator and it manifests itself) is the laws of functioning (gravity, cohesion, etc.) themselves. Where they are from is a complete mystery. Perhaps why they exist and where they are from is unknown, but we do know that they are laws and the universe as we know it functions according to them.
What about different levels of reasoning? Dogs know if something is alive or not, showing they have some reasoning, but they do not have it on a scale to create language. But they also don't have the vocal chords for it, showing that they may not be "designed" for it, if that is the case. Anyway, it is my believe that according to research and experience reasoning exists on a spectrum, and I do not believe that we are on the top. Maybe whales are, with their huge brains. We get such joy from thinking about the unknown and trying to become enlightened. It's as if we crawl on our stomachs grasping out and crawling to this sun of enlightenment, and that seems to be very basic and subconscious. Also worthy of note, we visualize this goal, this nirvana, as a shining light at the end of a tunnel (ever hear those back-from-the-dead stories?) and I believe that we do so because we project onto it the image of the sun, which gives us life. Funny how we turn something that gives us life into an archetype (hello, Jung) and project it onto our goals. So I would say I believe that humanity grew up under the sun, grew to worship it because it gave them life, and then built up a system of purpose involving the sun as an archetype to the deepest levels that represents our desires/drives. But I seem to have gotten off on a tangent here, what was my original point? Oh yes, reasoning exists on a spectrum and what is beyond us is quite interesting indeed. Fuck if it exists or not, Hume, I have faith in science because I am of human reasoning.
