Stuff I'm gonna need for Alaska

Next summer I'd like to do a backpacking trip in Alaska. I'd like a couple of people to come with me who are keen on spending a little over a week (maybe a week and a half-two weeks max) and hiking every day to a new location. I am saving $150/month for the next 9 months, which will give me $1350 disposable cash. This is my breakdown;

1000 miles each way -> 2000 miles @ 20miles/gallon (conservatively) -> 100 gallons. Figure ~$3.00/gallon, that's $300 for gas.

Things I have:
  • Tent (might need a better one, this one's a little big)
  • Car
  • Knife
  • Nalgeen

Things I will need, with an estimate of how much they'll cost:

  • Rope (for bear hitch) - $50
  • Backpack - $250
  • Sleeping bag - $200
  • Stove - $75
  • Gas for stove - $35
  • Rifle (yeah yeah), ammo, permit (?) - $250, perhaps
  • Another nalgeen - $15
  • Map - $5
  • Water purification (I'm thinking iodine tablets) - $25
  • Bug Spray/Sunscreen - $10
  • Sleep pad - $75?

Total supplies: $990

Add that to my gas expense (300), that's $1290.  Definitely within my accumulatable $1350.  And if people go with me, that expense only goes down :D

I am actually looking for a big trip for next summer. I would actually love to do that.
Otherwise, I might be around Portland in February.
